Ancient Near Eastern, Mesopotamia, Neo-Assyrian Empire, ca. 912 to 612 BCE. A hand-carved quartz stamp seal of petite, cylindrical form with a slender suspension hole drilled lengthwise through the body. Incised around the exterior surfaces is a wondrous scene depicting a right-facing archer standing on the head of a fallen creature while shooting his arrows toward a mythological winged quadruped. A second figure stands on the creature's other side while brandishing a knife, and the background is filled with celestial bodies. Size: 1.7 cm x 1.6 cm x 2.2 cm Provenance: private New York, USA collection, acquired before 2010; ex-private Lewisville, North Carolina, USA collection Condition: Minor abrasions and softening to some finer details, with small chips around peripheries, otherwise intact and very good. Nice preservation of the figural motif.
